El Dorado

The earliest reference to  El Dorado (the golden one) was in the mid-fifteen-hundreds and centers around the Muisca people of Colombia, South America. Like all myths and tails of treasure, this region has lured many an adventurer to their death as they searched for wealth and the fame it bestows on those who discover its location.

Wow, that sounds fantastic! Is that what will happen if I decide to participate in the Replenishment Project? The short answer is a definite, "NO!"

The long answer is, "Probably Not!" But let's look at a couple of examples of having high hopes for the future and see how it might apply. Recently, we watched as billions of dollars worth of lottery tickets were purchased in the hope of cashing in on the annuity value of $1,586,400,000. In the end,  three winners walked away with $327,800,000 - not bad for a two-dollar investment. The funny thing about this lottery is the fact that you are more likely to get struck by lightning while drowning than you are in coming up a winner.

You may have heard the phrases, "There's no such thing as bad publicity." - often associated with P. T. Barnum or "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about." by Oscar Wilde. Which brings us back to the Replenishment Project. If is successful, the reward will at least be recognition - something you could talk about with your friends and point to with your websites and smartphones. If it bombs, no one will be the wiser.

But what if the impossible happens and the Replenishment Project ends up being offered as an audiobook? Let's dream a little and take a look at how we might split up a net income of a hundred dollar bill. Of course like any projection, I've made a lot of assumptions here, which I'll layout for you. In its current form, there are 834 lines of dialogue (I know some are very long and some short, but I had to start somewhere).Let's say I wrote all the dialogue - I did 834 units of work. I've asked the narrator to produce audio for the entire script (every word, including descriptions of each scene) - he did 834 units of work. And then there's the editing, musical scoring, and sound effects - let's say all that is worth 834 units of work, which may or may not happen, but for our purpose here - we'll say its included in the finished product.

As you can see, if we received a $100 for our offering, a bit actor with one line would receive 3-cents or about a penny per word. The writer, narrator and Others (editor, music, and sound effects) would receive or further split $24.95 (7.2-cents per word). So, El Dorado, it's not, or is it? Well, it is my first attempt at fairly splitting up any imaginary money which might come our way. And hey, you can always play more than one character. And remember it's an unpaid project - as advertised!
